The Seagull, Anton Chekhov
The Seagull by Anton Chekhov is a slice-of-life drama set in the Russian countryside at the end of the 19th century. The cast of characters is dissatisfied with their lives. Some desire love. Some desire success. Some desire artistic genius. No one, however, ever seems to attain happiness.By using gauze on wire mesh, this helps eliminate the boundary between inside and outside, creating a borderless space that refers the intangible qualities of the play: the absence of mutual love, dream, art, and life.
In “The Seagull”, the play shows hopelessly misplaced love or desire very well. The satisfaction that character obtain from being artists becomes equivalent with their feeling of being loved. They want love from others but there are no fortuitous liaisons in the play. Also, they desire and pursue art in different ways but they are never satisfied. Their love, art, and life are very “Intangible.”
Intangible Quality
There are no boundaries between the spaces on the set. As for the materials, gauze on the wire mesh not only helps the audience see through the walls with the lighting, but also helps create interesting shadows on the back wall.
