Power and the Space of Appearance
“When revealing the most private spaces in theatre, this place blurs the boundaries that separate public and private.”
PERFORMING ARTS CENTER & THEATRE
The purpose of this performing arts complex is to create the theatre space for various people in Providence. This place will connect the other theatres in providence and provide people to gather and interact.
THE FIRST SCHEME - CIRCULAR FORM | DATE: MARCH 2013
This project started from thinking that most of the theatre spaces are private. Except the lobby and seating areas, stage and the spaces behind the stage do not allow public people to enter. This theatre complex turns these private spaces to public.
In the first scheme, people enter from the backstage, and the circular shape of structure allows people to move freely around the spaces and brings the feeling of the existing landscape. However, I wanted to find more clever way to reveal the private spaces in architectural way because the space itself did not support my idea fully.
THE SECOND SCHEME - DIAGONAL FORM | DATE: APRIL 2013
For the second scheme, all the boundaries are tilted and this aspect brings people more closely into private spaces, giving the experience of sharing the space inbetween private and public.
THE THIRD SCHEME - DIAGONAL FORM IN 3D | DATE: MAY 2013
At last, I started thinking this idea in 3 dimensionally. Not only the walls, but also the landscapes and floors are tilted. This idea creates the interesting movements, penetrating the building and changing the facade and roof. Every programmetic system and space is build based on one rule: revealing the private space
