Using 31st floor of The Residences, in Providence, Rhode Island, this project called for a residential design for a family who desire a home in the city.
Client profile: a couple with three children - 11 year old boy and 6 year old twin daughters. Dad is a set designer who often works at home and mom is a chef/food writer who also works in her home kitchen.
The view of Providence from the site’s high level makes people’s eyes move around the city below. This creates a transformation in the viewer in which he or she becomes like the traveling tourist. People in this residence are able to move freely around the house and travel through their spaces, following the central pathway, while having the greatest views at every corner.
By having the curved pathway, each space influences the one adjacent. The family can coexist in one connected space, while at the same time, they are able to have their own personal space. The pathway also becomes an indicator for direction and circulation within the space.
