King Lear, William Shakespeare
“King Lear” is a tragedy by William Shakespeare. The title character descends into madness after foolishly disposing of his estate between two of his three daughters based on their flattery, bringing tragic consequences for all.
In this play, King Lear loses his authority because he is blind to the truth and is ignorant about the real love his daughter has for him. The set itself represents his miserable life.
King Lear’s broken dignity and collapsed order is represented through the raked floors and layered walls. As the play progresses, the solid walls are rotated, taken apart, destroyed, and finally isolated. They are distorted in the audience’s viewpoint, playing tricks on their eyes.
