Ideogramming A WaterFire Cave In Providence Place
From the ideogram to the cave; from the interior to the city: This is the architectural itinerary of this studio. The final purpose of this studio is to create a WaterFire Cave as a transformation of a specific existing structure, Providence Place, and as an infrastructure of an existing ritual and urban event, WaterFire Providence.
The formation of a cave is created by our perception of darkness. In order to further understand the conditions of a cave, I explored the underpass of the providence place mall. I cut the site into several sections according to each hour of the day and measured the amount of light that I perceived at each spot. Through this process, I was able to create shapes of darkness and shadows.
After acquiring these shapes, I played with the units of darkness and discovered that the negative spaces within the site could serve as the architectural structure that people could inhibit.
Photo-Plastic Architecture
This infrastructure was generated from the negative areas of Photoshop study photos. This new construction is connected to the existing structure as it keeps the original quality of the units.
The program for this project is laid out according to the amount of light that each one needs so that the use of light would be maximized. And because of the unit’s diverse levels, the new structure does not obstruct the people’s views.
