A Collection for One
“Designing a space specifically for a highly regarded scholar and her/his collection.”
A world-renowned scholar will soon arrive for a joint one year research appointment to RISD and Brown University. S/he will bring with her/him, 100 specimens gathered from around the world and necessary for their research.
I assumed that the scholar who is visiting Brown and RISD studies the history of environment through the wine corks. The cork oak trees maintain sufficient hydration due to a system of roots that can reach several meters in depth. And people usually keep wines with these corks for about 100 years. This is why a cork can be a time capsule that contains the information of the environment about 100 years ago for the scholar. So by studying the wine corks, the goal of the scholar is to study the environment and reduce the level of water pollution.
The reason that people can keep wines for a long time is that corks have their unique quality, elasticity, so they keep wines from getting stale. The corks have elastic quality because cork oak trees have the cells of hexagon shape. Also their cell is the important resource for the scholar to study the environment. So the space for the scholar is focused on the relationship between the environment and the characteristics of the corks.
